chapter twenty

“Marc?”

It was a voice I knew, yet it seemed surprisingly distant.

“Marc?”

In fact, it was a voice that had become precious to me. As familiar as my own soul. It was like listening to music, and I would have been content to lie there, eyes closed, for the rest of my life, just to be able to listen to the voice once again.

Yet it wasn’t the only sensation. Along with hearing the voice, I could feel a wet tongue slobbering over my face and neck.

Did that tongue belong to the owner of the voice?

No. That wasn’t quite right. Perhaps it was the rancid smell of incredibly bad breath that told me that. Or the smell of wet fur and the apparent enthusiasm behind that wet, slobbery tongue.

“Oh, Humphrey, leave him alone for a moment, will you? I want to see if he’s okay.”

Again, the musical voice. I could sense that the speaker was near, could sense her concern, but couldn’t seem to pinpoint it exactly.

Nor did I understand the concern. From my point of view, I was at peace. Completely relaxed. And everything was right in the world.

The slobbering continued, and I thought that maybe not quite everything was right in the world. I could have done without that sheer amount of saliva on my face.

At the same time, in a way, it reminded me of something else. A night out under the stars, surrounded by boulders, near a pond or a lake.

There was a tongue on my face then, too, although the sensation was decidedly more pleasant.

I found myself smiling even though I wasn’t yet fully awake.

“Marc! Come on! We don’t have time for this! We have to go!”

Along with the musical voice and the slobbering tongue, I felt something else. Someone was shaking me, as if trying to awaken me from a deep sleep.

I almost gave in to the shaking, to the voice, to the slobbering tongue. Part of me wanted to find out what was going on.

But a larger part of me was more than comfortable just lying back in the grass, accepting the rain on my face and hands, perfectly at peace with the world.

“Marc, I can’t do this without you. Please wake up. Please. I don’t want to have to leave you behind.”

There was longing in the voice, and to me, it added to the musicality. But there was desperation as well, and that desperation was followed up with a sharp slap to my left cheek.

It jolted my head to the side, but even that wasn’t enough to make me want to leave the comfortable place I had found myself in.

Then another sensation joined in with the others.

It was another voice, or at least, the impression of one, and it came from within my own soul.

It didn’t say anything, but laughed at me in a sinister way, as if the owner of the voice was enjoying watching me.

It wasn’t a pleasant sensation, and I felt my eyebrows knit in response.

“That’s right, come back to me,” Tryne said.
